How To Remain A Non Smoker

Up front, I need to say that in my 25 years of working with smokers that hypnosis is by far and away the most successful way to quit smoking.

But remaining a non-smoker is another issue, because life keeps on throwing up problems for us and as a non-smoker it is important to do a few things to remain a non-smoker.

A life time non-smoker is never going to light up a cigarette if a crisis occurs, but the risk remains for ex-smokers unless you are prepared for this.

To stay off the smokes for life there are a few things you can do.

  • You have done a great thing for your health by kicking the habit, but your work isn’t over yet. It is important to take further steps to become healthier. Improve your diet by dumping the sugars and processed foods and become more active on a daily basis.
  • Become a protector of good sleep. Give your brain a rest and let it recover by getting a minimum of 7 hours sleep every night, and more is better. Your brain can detox, your body can heal and you will build up your physical and emotional resilience.
  • Make a conscious effort o relax every day. And you will probably have to try a few things to find the one or more that suit you and that you will do daily. Walk in nature, do Yoga, Tai Chi, Chikung, or a more passive meditation.
  • Whenever you see a smoker or a pack of cigarettes, congratulate yourself for not smoking and be a little disgusted at the act and smell of cigarettes.

These activities work to reduce your stress by activating your relaxation response to balance your daily stress response. By doing some of these activities regularly, if a crisis does occur, and it probably will, you will have a much greater capacity to cope without turning to some external solution like smoking.

One thing that everyone who has returned to smoking now realises is that the cigarettes did not help their problem and that they only felt worse for doing it.

It’s easy to tell people to do the above things, and it’s easy for you to decide to do them, however in order to make sure you are doing the things you need to do, to remain a non-smoker for life you need to make a plan but more importantly you need to recognise the importance of taking action in your life that will keep the cigarettes away for good.
