As a vital part of my quit smoking programme I teach clients some simple strategies to assist them in their lives as non-smokers. An example is a specific breathing technique.

Some clients embrace these strategies, some agree to do them and don’t and some push back.

I applaud those who do what it takes to succeed, I acknowledge that some people will say what they think I want to hear, but I take to task those who push back.

Some perspective clients resist using my strategies and if you are a smoker who resists methods that are foreign to you then this may help you.

Strategies such as breathing and smoking have a common factor. And that is that the results are predictable. Breathing methods have a predictable effect on your para-sympathetic nervous system.

It will calm you down and help specifically when you have a craving for a cigarette, and generally in managing the stress and anxiety in your life.

Smoking cigarettes also have predictable outcomes. The only question is how severe will be your illness and when it will affect you.

Life is not always predictable but in this case both the smoking and the assistance is, so what more would you need to know to stand up for your health and your future and take the action to save your life.

But of course you, like some of my perspective clients, you may dig your heals in and use the excuse of not believing these strategies to back away from quitting smoking.

My simple advice is to get over yourself., you are already doing something so bad for your health that it defies belief , so not getting on board with strategies to save your life is crazy.

Some people act as if I am asking them to stand on their heads in the middle of the road, instead of some simple things done privately.

I take my role in helping people to quit smoking very seriously, so this is why I put so much effort into bringing clients on board with my programme. However if I feel I am more committed then there are then I voice my concerns, and if we don’t reach an agreement then I opt out of the process.

While I want to help people to quit, I also know that I can’t help everyone and long ago I realised that it was impossible to try. I wonder how willing you are to do what it takes.
