Quitting smoking and starting and quitting over and over again, is this you? You are full of good intentions, a part of you want s so much to quit, and yet as soon as any stress or the offer of a cigarettes comes along you just light up.

There are several reasons for this, and things you can do about it.

  1. You believe that smoking solves stress, well it doesn’t. It just pumps you full of stress hormones after giving you a very brief moment of reward satisfaction. When you start smoking because you are stressed you are just fooling yourself.

2. You start and quit over again, so that in the back of your mind you know that even though you quit, it’s OK to start again because you will quit again. You have created a pattern of success and failure because this is your new comfort zone.

The big problem here is you spend most of the time beating yourself up and further convincing yourself that you can’t quit. This belief works against the part that wants to quit but perfectly suits the part that wants to keep smoking.

3. You have too much stress in your life to quit! You may be right, welcome to the human race. Most of the people in the developed world, where smoking is a known problem, have lots of stress, and yet most of them don’t smoke.

It’s not that I’m don’t feel any sympathy for your stress, it’s just that your way of managing it, is really bad. Even a quick search online will show you 50 ways to manage stress, like deep breathing or meditation or EFT which are safer and more effective than smoking.

So the bad news is that you now know there are other ways to manage stress, so one excuse for smoking is now gone. The good news is that you can manage your stress safely without smoking.

  1. You start again because you like it. Fair enough, but if you really want to experience the benefits of being a non-smoker you will need to weigh up the benefits and risks and make a final decision for yourself.

Maybe you could create a firm rule for yourself that you never accept, or ask for a smoke from anyone, nor do you ever buy cigarettes or ask anyone to buy them for you.

There is a solution to quitting smoking and starting and quitting, it’s hypnosis, it will set you free, but only if you really want it. Otherwise you might as well just smoke and save yourself a lot of stress.
