Quitting Smoking…Why Hypnosis?

Most clients I see for quitting smoking have tried most things and for many of them hypnosis is a little bit out of left field but they have generally heard it works.

Hypnosis works because it allows you to focus very clearly on one idea for an extended period of time.

Our conscious minds cannot hold a single thought for more than 15 seconds on average before we drift to something else.

We cannot consciously hold two thoughts simultaneously and make any sense of either.

Most people can’t remember a ten digit phone number without making a serious effort to learn it and we all know how quickly we forget someone’s name, at a party unless they have a special interest for us, and even then sometimes we have the embarrassment of having to ask again.

Fortunately your unconscious mind and autonomic systems can process millions of pieces of information and psychological processes instantly.

That is why you can look at a busy street and completely make sense of everything that is there and know what is going on and not even have to think about it.

But if there was a Zebra in your local shopping mall your unconscious wouldn’t have a reference for African wildlife in such a place and your conscious mind would turn its complete attention to trying to work out what is going on

Your conscious mind doesn’t process quitting smoking very well because it gets over ruled by your unconscious which has all the memories of smoking with friends behind the bicycle shed at school, to looking cool, to using smokes as a prop when bored or having a smoke when stressed.

All in all there could be thousands and thousands of stored references to smoking stored away in your subconscious files.

The problem comes when you choose to quit and your conscious mind cannot overpower the will of the unconscious which thinks it is protecting you.

Hypnosis bi-passes this problem by speaking directly to your unconscious mind. When you agree to hypnosis for a specific issue you allow this direct conversation to be had. Then it is simply a matter of your unconscious taking on new information and creating a new story about smoking.

This new story is that you don’t smoke. You do need to ensure that you don’t place too much pressure on this new thought for at least three weeks. By that I mean do not test your new non-smoking status by lighting up to prove you are in control.

Also take care when lots of alcohol is involved because you won’t have conscious or unconscious control to help you.
